Drogowieść app privacy policy
Version of 26 October 2026. Applies to the Drogowieść Android app and the browser version. This is a translation of the Polish original; if the two differ, the Polish version prevails.
In short: you do not create an account, and the app sends no data to the author. The app has no ads and no analytics (the drogowiesc.pl website only counts visits, without cookies — details below). Your location is used only to choose nearby places and is processed on your phone. Some features connect to external services, described below.
Who is responsible for data
The app is made by Daniel Jasion. Contact for all privacy matters: kontakt@drogowiesc.pl.
The author receives no data from the app. He is a controller of personal data only when someone writes to him (see “Correspondence”).
Location
- The app asks for location access only after you tap “Start trip” and uses it only during the trip, until you tap “End”. On Android it then also works with the screen off, which is shown by a persistent notification. The browser version works only with the screen on and the page open.
- Based on location, speed and direction of travel, the phone itself chooses which place to talk about. Most stories are stored in the app and need no internet.
- Your route and visited places are saved only on your phone (in “Trips” and “My discoveries”). Your location is not sent to the author.
External services
Some features connect directly from your phone to services run by other companies. Each of them is responsible for the data it receives, under its own privacy policy. As with any internet connection, the service sees your phone’s IP address.
- Wikipedia (Wikimedia Foundation). When there is no ready-made story nearby, the app sends approximate coordinates to find articles about nearby places and downloads their content. Wikimedia privacy policy.
- Map. When you open the map, tiles for the area you are viewing are downloaded from OpenFreeMap servers (in the Android app and in the browser version).
- Library server (cdnjs, run by Cloudflare). The browser version downloads the map library from it.
Data stored on your phone
Settings, trips (routes, stories you heard and your 👍/👎 ratings), discoveries and the list of places already told are stored only in the memory of your phone or browser. Nobody but you has access to them. You can delete a single trip with “Delete this trip”, heard places with “Forget heard places”, and everything by clearing the app’s data or uninstalling it.
In the Android app’s settings you can save a copy of your data (trips, discoveries, settings) to a file in a place you choose, e.g. Downloads or your Google Drive. The file is not sent to the author. It contains your saved trip routes, so keep it like other private files.
From version 0.3 the Android app also makes copies by itself: (1) in Android’s backup on your Google account (a Google service the author has no access to; you can turn it off in your phone’s backup settings) and (2) after each finished trip, in a file in the Documents/Drogowiesc folder on your phone. Both contain only trips, discoveries and settings. The file in Documents remains after uninstalling the app — delete it yourself, e.g. in the Files app.
The phone’s light sensor is used only to darken the map in the dark. Its readings never leave the phone.
Sharing a picture
A picture of a trip or of your discoveries (route map, numbers, a fun fact) is created on your phone. It reaches other people only if you send it yourself via the system “Share” function. Before sending, you can hide the start and end of the route.
If you include a listening link, it contains the trip name, its length in km, the list of places with stories and a simplified route (no times, speeds or personal data). To keep the link short, this simplified route is stored on the drogowiesc.pl server (Cloudflare) for one year from the last time it was shared, then deleted automatically. We do not record who opened the link or when.
The drogowiesc.pl website
The website runs on Cloudflare servers. We count visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, without cookies and without identifying individuals. The author sees only aggregate numbers, for example how many times a page was opened and from which country. Cloudflare privacy policy.
Once a day the Android app downloads a small file with the latest version number from drogowiesc.pl, to tell you about updates. It sends nothing. As with any connection, the server sees your phone’s IP address.
You download the app’s installation file from GitHub (GitHub, Inc.), which counts downloads. GitHub privacy statement.
Correspondence
If you write to kontakt@drogowiesc.pl, for example to report a bug, the controller of your e-mail address and message content is Daniel Jasion. This data is used only to reply and handle your report. The legal basis is the legitimate interest in replying to your message (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). We keep messages for as long as needed to deal with the matter, no longer than 12 months after the last message. The mailbox runs on OVH (OVHcloud), which stores messages on the author’s behalf.
You can attach a trip log to your report (in the app: Trips → a trip → “Copy trip log”, then paste it into the message). You send the log yourself; the app never does it automatically. It contains the names of places mentioned, times, speed, your 👍/👎 ratings and app settings, but not your coordinates. We use it only to find and fix bugs, on the same terms and for the same period as the message content.
You have the right to access, rectify, erase or restrict the processing of your data, the right to object, and the right to lodge a complaint with the Polish data protection authority, the President of the Personal Data Protection Office (ul. Stawki 2, 00-193 Warsaw, Poland, uodo.gov.pl).
Children
The app is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect children’s data.
Changes
We will announce changes to this policy on this page, with a new date at the top.
